A witness to the incident at St Margarets railway station in Twickenham has described the moment members of the public tried to help a person after they were hit by a train.

British Transport Police confirmed they were called to reports of a person being hit by a South West Trains train at the station just before 10.15am .

An ambulance crew also attended but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Potter Rafed was waiting at the station at the time of the incident and told getwestlondon he heard shouts before others waiting did what they could to help the person.

"I was just on Platform 1 waiting for the 10.15am train to Waterloo when a fast train at 10.12am was passing through on Platform 3," he said.

"I heard the train's horn blow for a long period and then i saw the train stopped. I heard some shouts behind me and that a woman was yelling 'call an ambulance'.

"I approached and saw a man's body under the train... there were only about five or six people on the platform along with me.

"We called an ambulance and few minutes after that police and ambulance started coming through and everyone was being evacuated from the platform along with all the passengers which were on the train which hit the person."

'Guards told us something had happened'

Jenny Henshaw , a passenger who was on a train going through Twickenham at the time of the incident, told getwestlondon : "I was just on a train which was stopped at Twickenham. Then guards said there’s emergency services because something has happened.

"Guards were saying there would be severe delays if anyone was planning to get the train. Platform 2 at Richmond is cordoned off."

The incident led to all lines between Twickenham and Barnes being closed. They were reopened at around midday, and trains were again able to stop at St Margarets.

South West Trains said delays of around 30 minutes, plus cancellations and revised routes, are expected until around 4pm .
