A fare-dodging Westminster PC has been sacked by the Metropolitan Police Service .

PC Saijid Farooq gave "false and misleading" statements after being stopped on a train on January 19 this year without the correct ticket, police said.

The officer, who served in the borough of Westminster, was issued with a £179 fine for fare evasion, which he paid.

He was dismissed from the force at a Special Case Misconduct hearing held last Thursday (September 15) by the Met.

He was found at the hearing to have fallen short of the standards expected of police officers in respect of "honesty and integrity" and "discreditable conduct".

'Behaviour fell far short of that required'

Assistant Commissioner Helen King, the Met's lead for professionalism, who chaired the disciplinary hearing, said: "The public rightly expect the police to uphold the highest standards of honesty and integrity on and off duty and, in particular, to comply with the law that they are empowered to enforce on others.

"Although dealt with by a penalty notice, failing to buy a ticket could have been treated as a criminal matter.

"Such behaviour clearly falls far short of that required of police officers and, in these circumstances, cannot be treated as an isolated and honest mistake to learn from, in relation to remaining as an officer.

"Therefore the appropriate outcome is dismissal without notice."
