A councillor who "spent his life serving the community" was given a fitting send off as about 200 people attended his funeral.

Hordes of well-wishers turned out to pay their last respects to Sohan Sangha, who had been a Labour councillor for Cranford since 2002.

Mr Sangha's coffin was taken in a horse-drawn hearse to his family home in Berkeley Avenue, Cranford, on Saturday (November 21) morning.

His family and other mourners said their final farewells as they dropped petals onto his body there before his cremation at Hanworth Crematorium, followed by prayers and langar at the Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha Southall.

Mr Sangha had died peacefully last Sunday (November 15) after a long illness.

His daughter Sukhi Sandhu said she was touched to see so many people at his funeral, where she estimated the turnout was around 200.

"We were overwhelmed by the number of people who came, and I think it would have meant a lot to him," she said.

"He spent his entire life serving the community and it was lovely to see that same community pull together to pay their respects."

The floral wreaths included one in the style of a Labour poster, which she said was a fitting tribute to a man for whom the party meant so much.

Feltham & Heston MP Seema Malhotra was among those at the funeral, where Councillor Mukesh Malhotra gave a speech.

Hounslow Council, which paid its respects by flying the borough flag at half-mast, has published a notice of casual vacancy for the position of Cranford councillor.

It said a by-election would be held within 35 days once two local government electors from the borough had made a formal request.
