This is how an eye-catching new bridge across the Thames , linking Brentford and Kew , could look.

Plans have been unveiled for a new timber-clad pedestrian crossing, which would cost an estimated £10m to build.

The proposed Brentford Bridge would span an old ferry crossing, connecting Ferry Lane off Brentford High Street with Kew Gardens on the southern bank of the river.

There would be a new shop and pier at the Brentford end, and a new entrance to Kew Gardens on the opposite side.

With its gentle curve and pale-coloured jutting wooden beams, the design resembles a giant spinal cord spanning the river.

'Amazing views of the unspoilt Thames shoreline'

Its proponents, who have launched a Facebook page to garner public support, say the proposals are at a very early stage but the plan is to secure a mixture of public and private funding.

The Facebook page, setting out their vision, states: "The bridge should become a destination in its own right with its amazing views of the unspoilt Thames shoreline."

Although the new crossing would be only a short way upstream of Kew Bridge, its backers say the stretch of Thames between Kew Bridge and the footbridge at Richmond Lock is the longest in west London without a crossing.

The bridge, consisting of a timber-clad metal frame, was designed by the Chiswick firm Acanthus Architects LW.

Innes Garden, who is among those behind the Facebook page, said the plans were originally drawn up when firms were invited by Transport for London (TfL) to submit tenders for a new Thames crossing.

'An architectural attraction in its own right'

He said funding shortages meant the project appeared to be dead in the water, but a small group of local residents were so impressed they had set out to revive the proposals.

"This would connect Brentford town centre, where some 5,000 new homes are being built, to Kew Gardens, and it would be an architectural attraction in its own right," said Mr Garden.

"It's all part of helping to boost the development of Brentford while improving connections and providing a useful addition to the Thames Path."

Mr Garden said the bridge would cater for pedestrians and cyclists, and had been specially designed so wheelchair users could access it without the need for a lift.

At £10m, the proposed crossing would be a snip compared with the reported £185m cost of the controversial Garden Bridge due to be built between Waterloo and Blackfriars bridges.
