Former Kensington MP Sir Malcolm Rifkind has been banned from entering Russia.

The former foreign secretary’s name is on the list of 89 senior European figures on a confidential Moscow stop-list, it has emerged.

It was strongly condemned by the Foreign Office, which said that there was “absolutely no justification” for the list which appears to have been drawn up in response to EU sanctions against Moscow.

An EU spokesman added: “We consider this measure as totally arbitrary and unjustified, especially in the absence of any further clarification and transparency. We are keeping in close contact with the member states involved.”

Sir Malcolm stepped down as Kensington MP after becoming embroiled in ‘cash for access’ allegations earlier in the year.

The vacant seat was won by Lady Victoria Borwick, who retained the seat for the Conservatives in the May 7 General Election.

Other names on the list include former Deputy PM Nick Clegg.
