The US' largest bank JP Morgan has taken a break from tradition and announced its employees no longer have to wear a suit to work.

In an industry always known to dress smartly due to the etiquette of dealing with wealthy clients, the decision was seen as unconventional and has drawn mixed reactions.

The memo to staff members said athletic clothing, including leggings, sweatpants and yoga pants are not be acceptable - nor are halter tops, flip-flops, hats or hoods.

It also added "distracting, tight, revealing or exceptionally loose or low-cut clothing" isn't allowed either.

Should employees not abide by the new dress code rules, they can be asked by their manager to leave and return when they are dressed suitably.

According to the Wall Street Journal , the memo came after CEO Jamie Dimon visited tech hub Silicon Valley, where he felt the bank’s "dinosaur-like" dress code didn’t match with other industries.

The London branch of JP Morgan has offices in Bank, Embankment and Finsbury Street.

Divided opinions have been voiced on social media, with some defending the pin stripes

However, others said the era had passed for a formal dress code because clients were dressing more casually
