Elderly people are being invited to attend an afternoon tea on June 12 as part of the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations .

The event is being organised by Kensington & Chelsea Forum for Older Residents and will tie in with the giant street party being held on The Mall outside Buckingham Palace the same day.

As well as celebrating Her Majesty’s achievements, it will also give an opportunity for older residents, who may feel socially isolated, to meet others and have a chat over a community celebration.

Organisers are especially keen for people born in 1926 - the same year as the Queen , to attend the event at Kensington Town Hall, in Hornton Street.

Young people from the scouts, police and army cadets and Age Concern are also helping organise the event and visitors will be entertained by the cadet band.

It will be the culmination of a series of events which included the lighting of beacons across the world and closer to home, to mark the special birthday .

Kensington and Chelsea Council mayor, Cllr Robert Freeman, said: “I am delighted the council is supporting such a great community event that will bring both young and old residents together to enjoy a first-class tea and show their respect for the Queen.

“This really is a whole-borough community event and for it to be a success I know the organisers need lots of willing hands and support. So if you’re a keen cake baker, can rustle up a tray of sandwiches, are handy with bunting, table laying or general organisation, do get in touch with the Kensington & Chelsea Forum for Older Residents direct.”

Anyone who would like to attend, nominate someone to attend or help out should contact Zhara Ghods, from the Kensington & Chelsea Forum for Older Residents, by emailing kensingtonandchelseaforum@hotmail.co.uk, calling 020 7352 1336, or writing to the group at Chelsea Methodist Centre, 155a King’s Road, London SW3 5TX.
