A road in Southall stretching almost one mile is set to be closed for eight weeks due to a faulty pipe.

Park Avenue will be closed from September 12 with signed diversions to be displayed in Uxbridge Road and South Road.

National Grid said access will be maintained for residents, businesses and local facilities while the repairs take place on the road which is around 0.8 miles long.

Engineers are to carry out the repairs because a section of a high pressure steel gas pipeline, supplying the local area, has been suffering from corrosion and requires repair.

Specialist kit will be used to dig large scale excavations as deep as 16.4 feet - the equivalent of five metres - requiring the road to be shut for the full eight weeks.

The repairs, National Grid said, are needed to ensure safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating and maintained.

'No alternative'

National Grid Network engineer, Brent Tattam, said: "This pipe plays an important part in supplying gas for cooking and heating to the local area.

"During our routine inspections we found it was suffering from corrosion and it now needs to be repaired.

"Wherever possible we try to consider alternative options or use repair methods which avoid a lot of digging and road closures.

"However due to the nature of this repair we have no alternative but to dig large excavations and close the road.

"We’re sorry for any inconvenience these essential repairs may cause and will do all we can to minimise disruption."

Engineers are currently carrying out work to the gas mains in Beaconsfield Road, which is closed at the junction of South Road, and will be reopened before the works on South Road begin.
