Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers dealt with a fire in a shop on Chippenham Road in Maida Vale on Tuesday evening (April 26).

The blaze destroyed a small room at the back of a laundrette on the ground floor of a three storey property, while the remainder of the shop was affected by heat and smoke damage.

Eight people left the flats above the shop before the arrival of the Brigade. No injuries were reported.

The Brigade was called at 9.51pm and the fire was under control by 11.12pm. Fire crews from Paddington and North Kensington fire stations attended the scene.

The Brigade was alerted by a neighbour, who saw smoke coming from the property.

Winston Douglas, station manager at Islington Fire Station, who attended the scene, said: "Fire crews worked extremely hard to ensure that the fire did not spread to the residential properties above the shop."

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.
