A hotel owner who has lived in Ealing for 48 years is planning to donate hundreds of pounds worth of blankets to refugees.

Pervez Sheikh, who has owned Acton Town Hotel in Gunnersbury Lane for 40 years, has bought 50 blankets after being "touched" by the refugee crisis.

The founder of the charity South Asia Society plans to donate them to refugees overseas, with any blankets left sent Acton Homeless Concern.

The 74-year-old, who lives in Pierrepoint Road, said: "This is for the refugees, they need help and they need blankets.

"It (their situation) touched my heart and I want to help them.

"I have 50 blankets at the moment, I can give these blankets to a Syrian family."

In October a total of 11 migrant children were placed into foster care in Ealing after arriving from the Calais camp.

They were placed into foster care, some in Acton, following Home Office checks.

Mr Sheikh, a dad-of-three with two sons and a daughter, said he felt it was his "moral duty" to support others.

He added: "They are all human beings like you and me.

"Our children have got everything they want, they have it, but these people have not got anything - it touched my heart.

"This is my moral duty to help other human beings."

Mr Sheikh arrived in the UK from Pakistan 50 years ago and set up South Asia Society 10 years ago.

Its 50 members help people, young and old, from the likes of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh who are struggling with life in Ealing.

This includes teaching people to speak English and arranging hospital appointments.

In 2013 Mr Sheikh donated £1,000 to Acton Homeless Concern , who help with providing hot meals, clothes and medical appointments for the homeless.

He added: "I am proud that we help people. I consider Britain is my home after 50 years."
