Ealing Council has taken the next step forward with plans to redevelop its headquarters into shops and hundreds of new homes, including some "much needed" affordable properties.

The outline plan, concerning 14-16 Uxbridge Road, proposes redeveloping the site to provide new homes, shops, a new library, a customer service centre and replacement council offices.

The current proposal suggests 236 private residential units and 235 affordable homes will be built, although it is possible the final number might change during the planning process.

A new building in Uxbridge Road will house the library, customer service centre and offices and the remaining land behind it will be used for the new homes.

If approved, the new shops would go along Longfield Avenue and a small basement car park would be created for both council and residential use.

The council suggested relocating the offices to the front will “complement other office developments in the immediate area” and create a civic focus adjacent to the listed Town Hall.

Councillor Julian Bell, leader of the council, said: “Our offices are in a key town centre location, but at the moment we aren’t making the best use of this important site.

“These plans will deliver much needed affordable homes in our town centre and also provide us with a brand new customer service centre and library, and a smaller, more modern and cheaper to maintain and run office block.”

On Tuesday (July 11), the council announced its partner in the redevelopment as Galliford Try, which proposes to remove the front part of Perceval House to provide the space to begin construction.

If approved, shops will be built along Longfield Avenue

If the plans are approved, council officers would continue to use the rear of the existing building until the new offices are able to be used.

Once they are complete, the rest of the old building would be demolished to enable the new housing development to be completed and retail units to be built along Longfield Avenue.

The Perceval House site, which is around 1.27 acres, backs on to the Great Western main line and is bordered by Longfield Avenue to the east and Uxbridge Road to the south.

Detailed design will begin in the autumn with a decision on the planning application not expected before spring 2018.
