Ealing Council has reassured residents after a fire broke out in a tower block famous for its use in the television comedy Only Fools and Horses.

London Fire Brigade attended the fire at Harlech Tower on Park Road East in Acton at 7.54pm on Wednesday (August 2).

The fire, which has been described as an accident, was contained to half of a four-roomed flat on the sixth floor in the block of flats and was over by 9pm.

Four people were led to safety by firefighters from the sixth floor via an internal staircase while 70 people left the building before the brigade arrived.

A Ealing council spokesman said: “Ealing prioritises the safety of its residents and has been investing in fire safety measures and has a comprehensive programme of assessments for the whole of its estates.

"The fire safety measures that were reviewed in the comprehensive fire risk assessment completed on Thursday May 25 all worked, and the compartmentation design that provides part of the integrated fire safety measures at Harlech Tower ensured the safety of residents.

"None of Ealing’s estate have any aluminium cladding, and the majority of homes have been provided with smoke alarms.

"All council dwellings were built to the relevant building control standards, which do not require sprinkler systems, they do however have a number of other safety measures, for example dry risers, which are maintained to ensure the safety of residents."

The building was used for exterior shots in Only Fools and Horses

The incident, at the tower which was used as the exterior of Nelson Mandela House, the home of the Trotter family from 1981 to 1985 in the BBC comedy, was attended by crews from Acton, Chiswick, Ealing and Hammersmith fire stations.

One man suffering from smoke inhalation was treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service.
