Improvement works set to "transform" Ealing Broadway station as part of the Crossrail programme are to get under way from the start of September.

The big make-over, which is being carried out by Network Rail, will include a new station façade, a ticket hall twice the size of the existing one and a long, curved canopy running the length of the forecourt.

Four new lifts will also be added to provide step free access to every platform, and platform extensions to accommodate the new 200m-long Crossrail trains.

The station will continue to act as an interchange with the District and Central lines on London Underground.

An information event for local people will be held on Wednesday (August 19), between 3pm and 7pm, at Ealing Broadway station.

Crossrail surface director Matthew White said: “Alongside this vastly improved station, local people will benefit from new trains, quicker journeys and better connections to destinations across the capital.”

The new Ealing Broadway station

Crossrail programme director at Network Rail, Matthew Steele, said: “We understand the need to keep disruption for local people to an absolute minimum while we are working in Ealing Broadway. We will put in place a range of measures to limit any impact on residents, businesses and passengers and will do everything we can to provide them with early warning of work that may affect them.

“In particular, we recognise the importance of Haven Green to local people. We have taken as small an area as possible for our worksite and will restore the site to its former condition once our work has finished.”

Council leader Julian Bell said: “Ealing Broadway is one of the busiest stations outside of zone 1 and the new station will bring considerable improvements to our residents and those working in the borough including improved accessibility to the platform.

"I encourage everyone who lives near Ealing Broadway station or uses it as part of their daily commute to take this opportunity to find out more about the plans for the station while the improvement works are under way.”

Network Rail will take possession of the retail units at the front of the station next month and begin to set up a temporary worksite on a section of Haven Green.

The first steps will be to lay the foundations for a new emergency exit bridge at the far end of the platforms, while the main work is scheduled to begin in summer 2016.

Measures will be implemented to make sure disruption to local people, businesses and road users is kept to an absolute minimum including acoustic barriers to limit the impact of noise, not having any deliveries to the site during morning and evening rush hours, sending out letters in advance to residents and businesses about any significant impact on them.

From the end of 2017, the station will be run by Transport for London as part of London’s integrated transport network.

When Crossrail fully opens in 2019, up to ten Crossrail trains an hour in each direction will serve Ealing Broadway station.
