New average speed cameras are set to be switched on along the A406 North Circular Road through Brent , Barnet and Ealing on Friday (June 17).

The cameras, part of a Transport for London (TfL) pilot scheme, will be in operation along the A406 North Circular Road from Hangar Lane to Bounds Green Road where there are 40and 50mph zones.

These new camera systems replace older fixed safety cameras which, according to TfL, will improve speed compliance along the full length of road, rather than just where a fixed camera is located.

Using number plate recognition technology, the devices set up at several locations along the road will record the time and date of each vehicle that passes and determine whether the car was over the speed limit.

New average speed cameras will also go live at the same time on the A316 in Richmond and Hounslow, a road which runs through major accident hotspots .

Average speed cameras went live on the A40 between the Polish War Memorial and Paddington last October.

Ben Plowden, director of surface strategy and planning at TfL, said: "We are strongly committed to reducing death and injury on London’s roads.

"That’s why we’re using the latest digital technology to tackle the address the number of incidents caused by drivers exceeding the speed limit.

"Average speed cameras mean that people comply with the speed limit on longer sections of road, rather than just where a camera is located.

"They can make a big difference in cutting the number of needless collisions, saving more lives."

TfL is using roadside message signs to alert drivers to the new system and drivers found exceeding the speed limit over the distance will be issued with a notice from the Metropolitan Police.
