Thousands of worshippers flocked to Hounslow to celebrate a Hindu festival marking the triumph of good over evil.

The Durga Puja festivities at Ashiana Banqueting Hall, in Bell Road, attracted around 7,000 people between Friday, October 23 and Monday, October 26, according to organisers.

The throngs enjoyed music, dance and free food as well as taking part in prayer sessions over the course of the four days.

This was the fourth year running the celebrations have been organised in Hounslow by the non-profit Bengali community organisation Prabashi.

Durga Puja marks the victory of the goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mashishasura.

Prabashi trustee Shankar Chaudhury told getwestlondon some 5,600 free meals had been served over the weekend.

He praised the musical and dance performances by local children and said visitors had been impressed by the 8ft Durga idol which was shipped from India.

He added that he was glad to see Hounslow's MPs Seema Malhotra and Ruth Cadbury among those attending, along with local councillor Ajmer Grewal.
