Dogs in Hounslow among the most overweight in the country sparking diet advice for pet owners

Hounslow dogs are significantly more likely to have an issue with their weight than any other location in west London

Dogs in Hounslow are among the heaviest in the UK

Dogs in Hounslow are the most overweight in west London and third most heaviest in the country.

Research by Pets at Home revealed in Hounslow that dogs are a barking mad 46% over their ideal weight, way ahead the UK average of 22%.

In comparison the unhealthiest dogs are in Swinton, Yorkshire, which are 48% above the ideal weight, and at the other end of the scale among the healthiest dogs closest to their ideal weight are in Maybole at 3% off a healthy figure.

The study by the pet retailer was of more than half a million four-legged friends across the UK.

'It should come as no surprise'

Sadly, there were no areas in west London that came in the top 10 areas where dogs are closest to their ideal weight.

Maeve Moorcroft, veterinary advisor for Pets at Home, said: "It’s interesting to see that on average the nation’s dogs are struggling to maintain their ideal weight.

"One of the things many pet owners struggle with is not spoiling their beloved dog with too many treats and snacks, for example cheese and chocolate, which can be harmful to their health.

"However, just as in humans, eating too many treats and carrying extra pounds can have consequences for canines, including damage to joints, bones and ligaments, problems with breathing and digestion and even quality and length of life in extreme cases.

"That’s why it’s important for pet owners to feed a balanced, nutritious diet to their dog."

Responding to the research, Andrew Bucher, the chief veterinary officer at MedicAnimal, an online pet healthcare retailer, said: "It should come as no surprise that more than one-fifth of UK pets are overweight.

"Pets, just like humans, need a balanced diet and the right amount of exercise.

"Quite often, in my experience as a vet, the main problem was that owners were failing to give their animals the correct type of nutrients or feeding them low quality products that can ultimately lead to obesity and other medical problems such as diabetes, heart disease, respiratory distress, high blood pressure or even lead to certain cancers.

"Pet ownership is certainly something to be valued, but it is not inexpensive.

"Pets with avoidable health issues such obesity are likely to spend more time at the vets leading to either higher insurance premiums or becoming uninsurable.

"If you think your pet is overweight then speak to your vet about the best way to help it slim down and consider your own and your pet’s current lifestyle.

"Remember, no more than 10% of your pet’s daily energy intake should be in the form of snacks or treats."

Tips on ensuring your pet is the correct weight:

  • You should be able to feel (and ideally see) the outline of your pet's ribs without excess fat covering.
  • When you view your pet from above, your pet's waist should be both clearly visible and palpable.
  • When you view your pet from the side, its belly should be tucked up not flat or convex.
