A Metropolitan Police officer is behind bars after having an affair with a suspect - when he was the investigating detective in the case.

Detective Constable Grant McPherson, 37, attached to Kensington and Chelsea borough, was sentenced to four months in prison for misconduct in public office.

He "fell short" of police standards after having an inappropriate relationship with a woman, who was the suspect in an allegation of criminal damage.

The disgraced cop was arrested at his home address in August last year, as part of a Directorate of Professional Standards investigation after a public complaint.

McPherson was charged in December 2016 and suspended from duty during the investigation.

Detective Inspector Jaysen Veeren of the Met's Directorate of Professional Standards, said: "When an officer investigates a crime he is expected to remain objective and professional.

"To do otherwise lets down the victims of crime and is a breach of public trust.

"Any officer who falls short of the standards the Met and the public demand can expect to be brought to account."

McPherson was handed a four-month prison sentence at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday (April 28) after pleading guilty to the offence at the same court on March 23.

The DC had also pleaded guilty to an offence under the Bail Act, after failing to attend the court, prompting a bench warrant to be issued.

He was also charged with two counts of supplying Class A drugs (cocaine) but this was dismissed.

Police misconduct proceedings will commence at the conclusion of the criminal proceedings.
