A disposable barbecue left on wooden decking caused a fire on Kensington .

It happened on the roof of a building on Ifield Road in the early hours of Sunday (July 24) morning, and resulted in fire crews from Chelsea, Fulham, Kensington and Battersea attending.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) are now urging people to dispose carefully of their barbecues.

They believe the fire started when the barbecue was left directly on timber decking. The occupiers were not at home at the time of the fire and it was discovered by a neighbour who saw smoke coming from the roof.

They were called at around 1.40am and had the flames under control within an hour

A LFB spokesperson said: “It appears that a resident had been using the barbecue on the roof and was left on the timber decking which caught alight.

“It is really important that people don’t use barbecues on balconies or on top of tower blocks as you could be putting the lives of the residents inside the building at risk.

"Always make sure barbecues are completely cool before leaving them unattended.”

The warning isn't the first LFB has issued warnings during the recent heatwave. On two occasions this month sunrays have caused fires in properties in west London.

The first happened in Barons Court, the sunlight reflected off a mirror and set fire to a house converted into flats.

The second incident happened in an outbuilding in a back garden Perivale on July 20
