The government’s tax credit cut will hit 7,000 children in Hammersmith, says MP Andy Slaughter.

He says 4,200 working families who claim tax credits in his constituency will be £1,300 worse off under the changes.

The Hammersmith MP was speaking after the Labour Party started a petition calling on the Prime Minister to stop the credit cut.

He said: “Three million families across the county will be affected by this cut and in Hammersmith alone around 7,100 children in working families will be hit.

“The government should not be making life tougher for families who work hard day after day just to get by. We are calling on David Cameron to act now and stop the tax credit cut. Signing this petition will send a message to David Cameron that Hammersmith families deserve better than this broken promise.”

The think-tank Resolution backed Mr Slaughter’s claims in a policy report which argued that hundreds of thousands of families would fall into poverty as a result of Mr Cameron’s welfare reforms.

David Finch, senior economic analyst at the Resolution Foundation, said: “Many of those looking forward to a pay rise this April will soon learn that those gains will be dwarfed by reductions to tax credits. And by weakening work incentives in the benefits system, the government has made it even harder for families to earn their way out of poverty.”
