A cyclist was killed in the City of London this morning after a collision with an HGV lorry.

The accident happened at 10am at Ludgate Circus - a junction which had initially featured on a list of 100 which Transport for London (TfL) planned to review, but was dropped.

The male cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, the London Ambulance spokesperson said. His death is the first of the year and follows 14 cycling fatalities on London's roads in 2013 , including six over the space of a fortnight.

London Assembly member Darren Johnson said: "This absolutely tragic news is made all the more poignant by the fact that TfL recently decided to cancel the major safety overhaul it had deemed necessary at this blackspot."

Mr Johnson, a Green Party politician, said six cyclists were killed or seriously injured at this junction between 2008 and 2012.

He added: "Six cyclists were killed or seriously injured here in the space of five years yet despite this dreadful toll TfL aren’t going to get this junction sorted out. We are seeing this pattern of inaction all across the road network in London and it is unacceptable.

"The Mayor as Chair of TfL has to show some leadership and take responsibility for getting London’s road network fit for cycling. It is terrible to think that we have to endure another decade of preventable casualties at this junction and many others which have been dropped from the Mayor's list, because of the lack of money. The Mayor must also ensure restrictions put on unsafe lorries are properly enforced and should urgently publish his review on a proposed peak time lorry ban."

Mr Johnson said segregated cycle lanes and 20mph speed zones would make streets safer for cyclists and pedestrians.
