A cyclist injured in a serious road collision in Richmond yesterday (Monday) has died in hospital.

The unnamed 40-year-old rider was involved in an incident with a dustcart on the A316 at the junction of Kew Foot Road and St John’s Grove, at 8am.

The London Ambulance Service and Air Ambulance both attended the scene and the victim was taken to Royal London Hospital suffering from serious head injuries.

He subsequently died this afternoon (Tuesday). His next of kin have been told.

Formal identification is yet to take place and no post-mortem has been scheduled.

The driver of the dustcart stopped at the scene and was not arrested.

Detective Sergeant John Hartfree, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit based at Merton, said: “The road would have been very busy at the time of the collision and I believe that a number of people would have seen the incident.

“I would urge anyone with information to contact us on the Witness Appeal number 020 8543 5157.”

The crash caused severe traffic jams which saw tailbacks all the way from Richmond Circus along the A316 as far as Hospital Bridge Roundabout in Whitton and beyond.

The delays lasted for hours as accident investigation work took place.

Enquiries continue.
