A tram which derailed in Croydon killing seven people was travelling at 43.5mph in a 12.5mph speed restriction zone.

According to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) as the tram approached the curve where it overturned, it was traveling three times faster than it should have been.

The interim report also states there was no evidence of any track defects, or obstructions on the track, and there were no faults with the braking system.

Seven people suffered fatal injuries and a further 51 people were taken to hospital, eight of them with serious of life-threatening injuries.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the incident on the morning of Wednesday, November 9, in which two carriages derailed on a tram service running between New Addington and Wimbledon .

A 42-year-old man arrested in connection with the tram crash on has been released on police bail.
