A man who made his career from preventing people being sent to prison has himself been jailed for fraud.

Criminal defence lawyer Azhar Islam Khan, from Pinner , lied about his income to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to steal more than £60,000.

He was jailed for 18 months at Harrow Crown Court on Friday (February 24).

Khan was found guilty of cheating the public revenue between January 1 2004 and April 5 2011, and two counts of the fraudulent evasion of Income Tax between January 1 2004 and March 31 2010, and between April 1 2010 and April 5 2011.

The 45-year-old, from Cecil Park, was sole shareholder of City Law Solicitors Limited of Olympic Way, Wembley .

During an HMRC investigation it was revealed he failed to declare the shareholder dividend income from his business and the rental income he received from two properties in Blackburn and Preston on his tax returns.

Investigators found Khan withdrew money from his law firm but lied in his accounts, recording the transactions as "professional fees".

The HMRC also discovered he paid for a new kitchen and bathroom for his home from the company bank account, recorded as business expenses.

Khan chose not to give any evidence during his four-week trial and was found guilty of the fraud offences on January 31.

He was suspended from holding company directorships for four years.

HMRC is now in the process of recovering his criminal proceeds.
