A 'cowardly' thug who attacked a man with a bottle and a saucepan and then went on to take 'trophy' photographs of him lying on the floor has been jailed for six years.

Ajeell Chiyamalandran of Larkfield Avenue, Harrow was sentenced to six years in prison for the 'nasty' attack he carried out on the 28 year-old man in Stanmore last year, Harrow Crown Court heard on Thursday last week (July 3).

The victim was the ex boyfriend of Chiyamalandran's current girlfriend, he was supposedly sending her threatening text messages and then later turned up at her address where both Chiyamalandran and his girlfriend were, Chiyamalandran hid behind the kitchen door and jumped out at the victim and smashed a bottle over his head.

The victim collapsed to the floor and Chiyamalandran proceeded to stamp on his head numerous times before picking up a saucepan and smashing that around his head.

The 21 year-old proceeded to humiliate the victim by taking a photograph of him on his mobile phone as a ‘trophy’ as he lay unconscious on the floor, before fleeing from the address. The victim was taken to hospital with fractures to his face, severe bruising and swelling.

Investigating Officer, DC Janine Stevenson from Harrow CID said: “This was an exceptionally violent and nasty attack which left the victim slumped unconscious on the floor in a pool of blood with multiple head injuries including a fractured cheek bone. Immediately before the incident Chiyamalandran repeatedly said to his girlfriend, “bring him to me.” She was terrified of not complying with his demands so allowed the victim to enter the address.

"Chiyamalandran had an unfair advantage over the victim as he hid behind the kitchen door, already armed and ready to strike. His actions were one of a weak and cowardly individual who was intent on inflicting serious harm on the victim, in order to impress his new girlfriend and to achieve complete control of her and their relationship."

During the interview, Chiyamalandran confessed to being at the address in Stanmore, but denied being involved in any assault, and told police he had never met the victim before. As a result of forensic evidence police were able to place Chiyamalandran at the scene of the crime and he was charged with GBH wounding with intent and was convicted on July 3.

DC Stevenson added: "Prior to this incident, Chiyamalandran had boasted to his new girlfriend that he had previously served time in prison, had been in possession of a gun and had arranged robberies. These were all lies, intended to intimidate and warn her to be mindful of what he was capable of so he could have control over her.

"Immediately after the attack, Chiyamalandran manipulated his girlfriend into lying to police and covering for him by threatening her not to "snitch" on him.

"I am very relieved that the jury saw through his deceitful lies. The pain and suffering caused by his callous actions is incalculable. This conviction sends out a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated by Harrow Police and perpetrators will be punished with the full weight of law.”
