A council error has left hundreds of disabled people in Hounslow waiting for payments they rely on to fund their care, getwestlondon has learned.

More than 900 people in the borough, who receive direct payments, are still waiting for their March instalment which was due at the end of last month, it is understood.

The lengthy delay has led to some carers cancelling appointments with their vulnerable clients as they have yet to be paid, according to unconfirmed reports received by getwestlondon.

Hounslow Council blamed an "administrative error" for the problem and has offered to help those affected as well as launching a review to ensure there is no repeat.

Direct payments were introduced to give people with disabilities greater independence by enabling them to choose and finance the services they needed rather than relying on local authorities to provide them.

getwestlondon understands recipients were due to be paid at the end of March but have now been told they must wait until April 17 for their accounts to be credited.

A council spokesman said: "We are extremely sorry if anyone has been inconvenienced by this administrative error.

"This is the first time this has happened but we recognise the seriousness and we will review our systems to ensure it does not happen again.

"We will of course provide help to anyone who is suffering financially. If anyone does need to contact us they can call 020 8583 5736."
