A brave six-year-old with cancer had a blast at a space-themed party thrown to salute the courage of youngsters battling the disease.

Saksham Mamgain, of Isleworth, was a guest of honour at the Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens Star Awards party, held at The Roof Gardens, Kensington, on Saturday (May 30).

He was one of 20 children from across the country representing the 620 young people nationwide to have been awarded Kids & Teens Star Awards during 2014/15.

All the winners have had stars named after them, hence the cosmic theme, with galactic games, rocket launching and freeze-dried astronaut ice cream all on the menu.

Saksham and co also got to meet a stellar line-up of celebrities, including former Pussycat Dolls member Kimberley Wyatt and TV presenter Matt Johnson, before receiving their awards during a presentation ceremony.

The party, held in partnership with fashion retailer TK Maxx, ended with entertainment from CBeebies favourite Mr Maker and a performance by X Factor stars Only The Young.

Saksham's mum Santosh, 35, said: "Saksham loved the party, especially the space theme.

"It was wonderful to be part of it - it's a day we will remember for a long time."

Saksham was diagnosed with leukaemia on his fifth birthday, in April last year. He has now finished the intensive phase of his treatment and is receiving maintenance treatment but remains happy and chirpy.

The Star Awards are part of Cancer Research UK's Kids & Teens fundraising campaign, which aims to accelerate research to find kinder treatments and cures for children, teens and young adults with cancer.

The charity has helped to transform the outlook for children with cancer in the UK. Around three-quarters of under-15s with the disease are now cured compared to only a quarter in the late 1960s.

TK Maxx is the biggest corporate supporter of research into beating children's cancers in the UK, where around 1,600 children are diagnosed with the disease each year - around 220 of them in London.
