Commuters seeking travel updates were left baffled on Monday (December 11) after coming across a series of bizarre posts from TfL on Twitter.

Sandwiched among its usual tweets were a string of posts using only 0s and 1s, prompting people to ask whether the account had been hacked.

However, some tech-savvy followers quickly deduced TfL was tweeting in binary, with its first tweet reading: "It's Matt here, talk to me."

Binary code - a system used in digital computers - was then adopted by other social media users who understood the sequence of numbers.

In a lengthy post, one person reminded Matt there is only "13 days till Christmas" while another asked for TfL's thoughts on Brexit.

Others wished Matt a good shift and some dubbed the unusual and number-based tweets "top banter" and "neat".

In response to TfL's question "binary again yay or nay?", one user responded "01111001 01100001 01111001" - meaning yay.

Some were not so keen, with one writing "I’m not going to pay for travel today, just for the disrespect" and another asking: "You OK hun?"

Speaking to the Standard , a TfL spokesman said its social media workers are encouraged to use their creativity while providing traffic updates.

With one Twitter user commenting the posts were "an improvement", Matt replied: "I try."
