GetwestLondon understands Clapham Junction railway station has been evacuated.

Reports appeared shortly before 1pm on Wednesday (August 16) suggesting people and passengers had been told to leave the station.

It comes amid major disruption to South West Train services in and out of Surrey and London due to a derailed train and ongoing £800m improvement works at London Waterloo.

'I thought only I could hear it'

Helena Benge, who was in the station when the test occurred said:

There was a huge siren and a huge voice saying “This is an important announcement. Please leave the station by the nearest exit. Please do not run.”

I thought only I could hear it by the way everyone was ignoring it completely.

Relief

After a few minutes, station staff announced it had been a test, which came as news to several passengers.

'Scheduled test alarm'

South West Trains have told us this was a “scheduled test alarm, but not an evacuation”.

The evacuation was announced over Clapham Junction’s tannoy at around 12.54, but it seemed few people actually tried to leave the station in response.
