Children were among five people who fled a fire in Harrow , which is believed to have been caused by incense sticks.

Three adults and two children escaped the blaze at a flat in Lulworth Gardens, Harrow, on Monday (May 2) night.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said the occupants had left the property before firefighters arrived and none of them had been injured.

It said a woman and two children had escaped from the ground floor of the house, which had been converted to flats, and two women vacated the first floor.

The LFB said it was called at 8.51pm and 21 firefighters and officers tackled the blaze, which was under control by 10.05pm.

It said the ground floor was badly damaged by the fire, which had also affected the first floor, and that the fire was believed to have been caused by incense sticks.

The LFB said the occupants had been alerted by a smoke alarm, and the incident highlighted the need to ensure you have a working smoke alarm fitted.

A spokesman for the brigade said: "Everyone should have at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home and the safest option is have those linked together.

"This will give the earliest warning if there is a fire in your home."
