A nursery in Hounslow has come under fire after a toddler managed to escape - unknown to staff.

It is believed the child, who goes to Play 2 Learn in Berkeley Avenue, Cranford, was found by a member of the public in a park behind the nursery, who then escorted the child back.

The incident was reported to Ofsted on Wednesday June 7, and raised concerns about the supervision and safety of the children attending.

The following day officers made an unannounced visit to see if the nursery was meeting Early Years Foundation Stage welfare requirements.

As a result a notice of improvement was issued to the nursery.

During the visit the officers reviewed the arrival and collection procedures, checked the security of the premises, and interviewed the provider.

In a complaint report of its findings, Ofsted said: "We found that a child had managed to leave the premises unsupervised.

"The provider confirmed that they have instigated a review of practice and an internal investigation is in process.

"The provider has introduced a revised procedure to improve security and reduce the potential of a child being able to leave the premises unsupervised in the future."

Following the investigation Oftsed issued the provider with a notice to improve, which required the provider to:

  • keep children safe at all times and make sure they do not leave the premises unsupervised and are usually within sight and hearing but always within sight or hearing;
  • take all reasonable steps to prevent unauthorised persons entering the premises.

Ofsted will continue to monitor the actions taken by the provider.

We have contacted the nursery for a comment.
