Chelsea star Cesc Fábregas has been charged with driving his Aston Martin 110mph in a 50mph zone.

The 28-year-old Spanish midfielder - full name Francesco Fábregas Soler - of Upper Belgrave Street, Knightsbridge, pleaded not guilty through solicitors at Staines Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (August 11).

Addressing the court, prosecuting counsel Darren Matravers said the offence happened on Thursday January 15 this year.

Mr Fábregas has admitted he was driving the Aston Martin - registration CF04 FAB - at the time, Mr Matravers said, and was caught on a LTI 20/20 ultra-light hand-held laser speed camera on the A3 at Claygate, Surrey.

Given the not guilty plea, the court heard, the defence is likely to be based around a mechanical or technical issue.

A trial was scheduled for Friday October 9, to be held in Guildford.
