Chelsea FC cancel Premier League victory parade following Manchester terror attack

The Premier League winners were due to go on a parade on Sunday May 28

Chelsea FC have announced they have cancelled their Premier League victory parade which had been due to take place in London on Sunday May 28, in the wake of the terror attack in Manchester.

It comes after 22 people were killed following an attack at the Manchester Arena on Tuesday May 23.

Following the attack the terror threat level was raised to "critical" and the army have been deployed in London at key tourist sites.

A statement from the club reads: "Everyone associated with Chelsea Football Club offers our heartfelt condolences to those affected by Monday’s terror attack in Manchester.

"Our thoughts go out to all the victims, and their families and friends.

"In light of these tragic events, we feel it is inappropriate to go ahead with the victory parade in London on Sunday."

The statement goes on to say that the action was taken given the "heightened security threat announced by the government".

"Having consulted with the Metropolitan Police, Hammersmith & Fulham Council and other authorities, we know the emergency services would have been as professional as ever, but we would not want in any way to divert important resources by holding an additional, non-ticketed event on the streets of London," the statement said.

As a mark of respect, Chelsea players will wear black armbands for their FA Cup Final against Arsenal at Wembley on Saturday (May 27).

The club will also make a donation to a fund supporting the victims of this horrific attack.

Getwestlondon has approached Arsenal to see if they will be joining Chelsea in wearing black armbands and is awaiting comment.
