Brunel University London students enjoyed a week-long celebration of summer graduations last week (July 13-16).

Families and friends came together at the university's campus in Uxbridge to see their loved-ones receive their well-deserved degree certificates.

The ceremonies, held over four days, were held in the Indoor Athletics Centre on campus.

Bachelors, Masters, Postgraduate Diplomas and Doctorates were given out, as well as Honorary Degrees, Fellowships and special additional awards for hard-working students.

Martin Zaranyika, president of the Union of Brunel Students, gave a poignant speech at the ceremony.

He said: “Getting a degree requires hard work, dedication, persistence and tenacity. The road ahead is sure to pose many challenges, but having completed your degree you've demonstrated that you're more than ready to meet them.”

Professor Julia Buckingham, Vice-Chancellor of Brunel University, said: “The best degree ceremonies are a careful balance of tradition, ceremony and celebration; events that will create lifelong memories for those graduating and for their families and friends.”

Cllr John Hensley, deputy mayor of Hillingdon and ward councillor of Ickenham, received an Honorary Fellowship in recognition of his significant contribution to the university.

He is an active member of the Industrial Advisory Panel for the Department of Mechanical Engineering and made “significant contribution” to the development of courses.

Shami Chakrabarti CBE was awarded the Doctorate of Letters for her work with Liberty, the National Council for Civil Liberties.

Ms Chakrabati, who has been Director of Liberty, the National Council for Civil Liberties, since 2003, told students from the university’s College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences: “This was such a wonderful honour.

“I am from north-west London so it was fantastic to return to this side of the capital. I truly find this a statement of solidarity by the university.

"Human rights are under attack every day and it's great to stand firm together."
