British Airways has said it "continues to make good progress" in rebuilding operations following a major IT systems failure over the bank holiday weekend.

Thousands of holidaymakers were left stranded after the airline grounded all flights both in and out of Heathrow and Gatwick airports on Saturday (May 27), due to an IT failure which affected the airline's systems worldwide .

In its latest statement on Monday morning, BA said: "We continue to make good progress in rebuilding our operation, following Saturday's major IT systems failure which severely affected our operations worldwide."

BA added: "We operated a full schedule at Gatwick on Sunday.

"At Heathrow, we operated virtually all our scheduled long-haul flights, though the knock-on effects of Saturday's disruption resulted in a reduced short-haul programme."

The airline has also moved to reassure passengers, saying there was "no evidence" to suggest the global system outage was due to a cyber attack.

With progress being made on the IT systems, BA said it was hoping to run almost to schedule on Monday (May 29).

"As our IT systems move closer to full operational capacity, we will again run a full schedule at Gatwick on Monday and intend to operate a full long-haul schedule and a high proportion of our short-haul programme at Heathrow.

"We apologise again to customers for the frustration and inconvenience they are experiencing and thank them for their continued patience."

Passengers who planned to travel from Heathrow Airport on Monday were advised to check the website beforehand.

Posting on Twitter, Heathrow Airport warned of some continuing disruption.

Customers looking to re-book flights were also advised to head to BA's website.
