This is the amazing footage captures the moment a suspect is chased down by a police dog in a training exercise.

City Police Dogs attached the camera to Police Dog (PD) Cairo while he chases down a fleeing suspect.

The animal, from South Yorkshire, uses his rapid speed to catch up with the suspect during the training exercise before using its teeth to ensure he does not escape.

City of London Police said it has 21 dogs - spaniels, labradors and German shepherds - trained in the likes of explosives and drugs detection or being a general purpose dog.

Training for a dog is set at a minimum of eight weeks for search dogs and ten weeks for general purpose dogs, although training remains continual after this.

City of London Police said training for dogs starts at four months old, although it can be dependent on the dog.

City Police Dogs posted the video on Twitter along with the words: "Ever wondered what it's like for the dog? PD Cairo chase and detains a bad guy & protects his dad."

The video was met with a warm response on social media, with GSD Services commenting: "@CityPoliceDogs Great view of good work.

"Hopefully gives many a better understanding of just how good our PD's are at what they do."

PD Cairo has been hailed as a brilliant addition to the police. (Twitter: @CityPoliceDogs).

And Howard Davies also commented to say: "@CityPoliceDogs @GoProUK Always knew Cairo was destined to be a star - top work!"
