The recycling plant which caught fire and led to huge amounts of smoke being seen for miles around London has been named as EMR Brentford.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called to Transport Avenue shortly after 12pm on Monday (January 2) and dealt with a fire involving 75 tonnes of recyclable waste , roughly the equivalent of 45 cars.

Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters and officers were called before the fire was under control by 3.11pm.

Firefighters returned this morning (January 3) to retrieve equipment

An employee, who asked not to be named, from EMR Brentford, a scrap metal yard, confirmed the blaze happened at one of two of its sites at the end of Transport Avenue.

The yard was closed on Monday (January 2), but staff returned back to work on Tuesday (January 3), the employee said.

LFB said firefighters first left the scene at around 11pm, almost half a day later than when they were called at 12.08pm, but returned to retrieve equipment this morning.

Getwestlondon has approached EMR Brentford for further information.

LFB had urged nearby residents to keep the windows and doors shut, but have since said it is safe to now keep them open.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
