A mum-of-three with diabetes has set up a new group in Brent to connect people with the lifelong condition.

Manjula Daley, 50, of Wembley Park, who was diagnosed three years ago decided to take matters into her own hands, backed by charity Diabetes UK, after realising the challenges she faced with understanding and managing the disease.

The group aims to provide support for people with Type 1 and 2 diabetes who live in the borough.

Ms Daley, who works part-time for AP Security at Wembley Stadium, said: “I saw that there was a definite need for a group because of the lack of support available through the health system.

“I believe that empowering people with a bit more knowledge about diabetes and how to manage the condition by simple life changes can be very beneficial.”

A record number of diabetes sufferers were found in Brent with 24,132 people or 8.35% of the population diagnosed - the second highest percentage across London - well in excess of the London average of 6.1%.

There is also a growing number of people in west London reported to be at risk of developing diabetes , recent research unveiled.

And just last month, in April, a diabetes roadshow in neighbouring borough Harrow found a concerning number of people were at risk of Type 2 diabetes.

The new support group will meet at Chalkhill Community Centre, 113 Chalkhill Road, Wembley Park, on the second Wednesday of each month from 12.30pm to 2pm.

The next meeting is on June 8.

Ruth Szotten, Volunteer Development Manager for Diabetes UK, said: “Diabetes can be a difficult condition to manage and people with diabetes can learn from each other.

"We want to help people find a balance between living their lives and and keeping in good health.”

To attend the new group is free. For more information email: london@diabetes.org.uk
