Two police officers had an eventful shift when they helped deliver a baby in the back seat of a car.

OnTuesday (April 7), at around 1am, PC Paul Howarth and PC Anna Drake were on patrol in Manor Park Road, Harlesden, when they were approached by a man who needed urgent help.

His wife was in labour and desperately needed to get to the hospital, yet she was in the back seat of their car. Hoping the officers could help her get to the hospital in their police vehicle, Joshua Ankamah flagged the officers down.

Upon reaching Ruth Aboagyewaa, the officers found she was in the final stages of labour, the baby's head was crowning and was on its way.

Realising the ambulance wouldn't get there in time, the officers decided that their only option was to deliver the baby themselves, in the back seat of the car.

Baby Ankamah Joshua Junior was delivered safe and sound thanks to the two officers, and was swiftly taken to the hospital in an ambulance alongside new mother, Ruth.

The family are said to have been extremely grateful for their assistance.

PC Haworth said: “The best thing about being a police officer is you don’t know what is around the next corner.

"My colleague PC Drake was immense last night, cool and calm under pressure in the best traditions of the Metropolitan Police.”

PC Drake said: “This was the last thing on our mind when we were pulled over.

"Upon checking on the condition of the pregnant female and with the baby crowning, PC Haworth, a father-of-three realised we were never making the hospital and the baby was coming now.

“I'm just glad we where there to assist and relieved everything went so smoothly.”

In July 2014, police officers helped deliver a baby in the car park at Morrisons in Acton, and in February, a Fulham woman gave birth in the back of a taxi.
