A suspect, who was not armed, was arrested after officers were alerted to an intruder within the grounds, the Metropolitan Police said.

Commander Adrian Usher, head of the Met Police ’s Royalty and Specialist Protection, said: “I am content that our security measures worked effectively on this occasion and at no time was any individual at risk.”

Last month Greenpeace protesters placed emergency face masks on the Queen Victoria statue opposite the palace in an effort to demand action on air pollution.
