The capital is bracing itself for up to 70mph winds as the Met Office issues a severe weather warning for Friday (February 3).

A spokesman for the Met Office , Graham Madge, told getwestlondon people in London could expect to see strong winds.

Within the severe weather warning, the Met Office also highlights the possibility of travel delays, damage to trees and possibly buildings and power supplies.

"Within the warning area itself, we are warning of gusts of 60 to 70mph and perhaps even 80mph in exposed coastal areas," Mr Madge said.

Gusts of up to 70mph are forecast inland

Forecasters have also warned that we could experience a period of unsettled weather throughout the week, due to high winds coming in from the Atlantic.

Mr Madge said: "There is still some uncertainly about how this will develop, we're continuing to watch the development of these low pressure systems, but it's going to be one of a number of weather features over the next few days that is going to lead to a very unsettled spell of weater."

The Met Office has warned of possible disruption to travel due to high winds

He added: "We have a very vigorous jet stream which is a band of high altitude winds coming across the Atlantic that will help steer low pressure systems towards us and there are a number over the next few days which will be heading our way."

Heavy rain and strong winds are expected to batter the capital from late in the day tomorrow, Wednesday February 1, through to Sunday February 5.
