Will Self has joked that Uxbridge and South Ruislip MP, Boris Johnson , is an “absurd, self-satirising politician.”

The unlikely pair met in a 'lively encounter' at a Brunel University event on Friday (30 October).

The University's Professor of Contemporary Thought, Will Self, discussed the value of higher education, recommendations against a third runway at Heathrow, and immigration with the current Mayor of London.

In the the question and answer session, students and invited educationalists from the London Borough of Hillingdon questioned him about various education policies.

Dr Rebecca Higgie posed a question about Mr Johnson's views on appearing on comedy shows as a serious politician.

Boris, who holds an honorary Doctor of Law at Brunel, replied: “I see nothing wrong in going on comedy shows if you can get your point across. There’s no harm in using jokes.”

Will Self joked: “You are self-satirising politician. Your strategy is to ask, ‘How absurd can I be today?’”
