Gardeners can enjoy a taste of the high life - literally - following the launch of rooftop allotments in Hounslow .

There are 35 plots above apartments at the new Brentford Lock West development where green-fingered residents can grow their own food while getting acquainted with their neighbours.

The allotments on top of the five-storey Carrick Square apartment block, beside the Grand Union Canal , are managed by Cultivate London, which grows produce at urban sites around west London.

The charity will run a demonstration allotment and hold monthly workshops advising city gardeners how best to get their plots to flourish.

The plots were officially unveiled on May 28 by Cultivate London and developer ISIS Waterside Regeneration, with Brentford and Isleworth MP Ruth Cadbury among those in attendance.

John Robinson, development director for the site, said: "There are over 28 allotment sites available across the London Borough of Hounslow , all of which have waiting lists, so we're excited to see our allotments become a lively and productive part of life in Brentford.

"We are committed to providing a variety of usable community spaces that foster a positive community spirit and can be enjoyed by residents for years to come."
