A new school in Stanmore has been given the green light by Harrow Council.

At a planning committee meeting on Wednesday (February 17) Avanti House School was given the official go-ahead and will provide 1,240 secondary school places in the borough.

The school will reportedly be three storeys with a sports hall, built on Wemborough Road in Stanmore.

The planning application drew over 650 letters of support and received just over 120 objections.

The council chamber was filled with supporters of the school who campaigned for the success of the application.

Many objectors, concerned about issues such as flooding, traffic, noise and residential amenity too were present and spoke at the meeting.

Cllr Simon Brown, portfolio holder for children, schools and young people at Harrow Council said: “We are delighted that Avanti House School has found a permanent home, close to where so many of their current students live.

“The planning committee were clear that an improved travel plan needs to come back to planning in July and there will be road widening to cope with extra traffic.

“While we are pleased that Avanti will provide 1,240 much-needed secondary school places in the borough, there is more work to be done.

"Harrow is projected to need another 14 forms of entry for secondary pupils over the next seven years. We are working on a strategy now that will make sure we have a place for all our children in a good school, close to home.”

Speaking after the meeting, Avanti Schools Trust told getwestlondon : “We are pleased with the outcome of Harrow Council's Planning Committee meeting yesterday evening.

“We welcome the widespread support from across the community for the school and will continue to work with the local community as the plans progress.

“This decision represents an important step towards providing a permanent home for the secondary phase of Avanti House School.

“The team behind plans for a new home for the secondary phase of Avanti House School are discussing next steps and will be sharing these with the community shortly.”
