A series of sketches capturing the people who live, work and shop in Portobello and Golborne Market makes up the latest art installation on the Portobello Wall.

The work by artist and illustrator Fiona Hawthorne , entitled ‘One Five Zero’, was commissioned by the Kensington and Chelsea Council to celebrate the market’s 150th anniversary .

Ms Hawthorne, whose portrait of US president Barack Obama hangs in Congress, spent last July at the market, in cafés, at stalls and beside shops, drawing at speed to capture life as it happened around her.

The result is a series of portraits and sketches of market scenes and people going about their business, printed on durable steel.

It is Ms Hawthorne’s second art installation on the 100-metre Portobello Wall. In 2013, her work ‘Aspects of Carnival’ depicting the Carnival preparations, the parade and clean-up featured on the wall.

Speaking of her latest project, she said: “I loved every minute, capturing the rare, dynamic energy of Portobello and Golborne Market, the stalls, traders, visitors, characters, moments, exchanges and day-to-day life.”

The Royal Borough ’s cabinet member with responsibility for the market, Cllr Tim Ahern, said: “It is fitting that the new Portobello Wall installation should celebrate the market’s 150th anniversary. Fiona Hawthorne has done an amazing job capturing the spirit of the market.”

The installation will remain on the wall until June 2016. Prints of all the artwork which make up ‘One Five Zero’ are available for sale, contact portobellomurals@gmail.com.
