An Ealing man has launched an app aiming to tackle the issue of unsatisfactory police encounters with youths.

URightz is designed to inform the general public of their rights and the rights that officers are entitled to in a number of different scenarios.

With the slogan 'an informed public is a safer public' the app puts all the necessary information about police encounters right in the users hand.

URightz - An Informed Public is a Safer Public

Jeton Ferati, URightz director, said: “We are trying to encourage positive police encounters and inform the public of their rights so that the police can be held accountable.

“Lots of youths have both positive and negative experiences with the police so we are trying to give back to the youths and make sure they know their rights and what they are entitled too.

“Essentially we are letting the youth know what the police can and can't do but also telling them what they are allowed to do when dealing with the police and what they can't do.

“We want to help young people avoid getting fines or even a criminal record when it isn't necessary and potentially unlawful.”

URightz - The game-changing law app encouraging positive police encounters

The app highlights four main situations – on the street, pulled over in a vehicle, in your home and being arrested – giving an overview of the most common legal questions regarding each scenario.

Under each situation there is also 'Yes' and 'No' tabs which provide a summarised list of all the rights the public and the police are entitled to and what is prohibited in respect to the chosen scenario.

The app also includes a record button allowing the user to film their encounter straight from the app and gain the footage that they would need to hold the police accountable to any wrongdoing.

The app currently allows you to select UK law or federal law in the United States but plans to expand on this to become a universal app which can be used across the world.
