Campaign groups against Heathrow expansion are gathering outside Downing Street on Thursday (July 20) to urge new Prime Minister Theresa May to “save us from a third runway.”

Stop Heathrow Expansion and HACAN (Heathrow Association for the Control of Aircraft Noise) protesters will be joined by other groups from across London and Berkshire as Mrs May leaves No. 10 for the House of Commons for her first Prime Minister’s Question Time, on Wednesday (July 20) at 11am.

Banners will be unveiled alongside a chant of “Thersea May, save us from a Third Runway.”

Robert Barnstone, Campaign Co-Ordinator for Stop Heathrow Expansion, said: “We are sending Theresa May a reminder that she should not change her views on a third runway at Heathrow.

“Now, as prime minister, it is for her government to deliver the verdict that so any residents around Heathrow want; to end the threat of the third runway for good.”

Mrs May has previously strongly opposed the west London airport's expansion and anti-Heathrow third runway campaigners hope she will stick to this.

Hopes were high for the expansion of Heathrow to be scrapped after Mrs May revealed her cabinet last week which includes Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary , Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond and new Transport Minister Chris Grayling – none who have expressed hope for expanding Heathrow.

Mr Grayling indicated at the weekend that a decision on the Government’s preferred location for a new runway will be announced in the autumn.

Meanwhile Mr Hammond may have accidentally let slip the government's decision on Heathrow during his first day in his new job, revealing Heathrow as the likely destination for a new runway.

HACAN chair John Stewart added: “We know from her past statements that Theresa May is no fan of Heathrow expansion.

“We will be gathering to remind her that she now has the power to stop it.”
