The cause of an out of control bonfire which led to traffic chaos on the A40 Western Avenue is under investigation.

Firefighters were called to the blaze after 30 tonnes of waste wood was destroyed by fire close to the A road in Northolt.

It caused long tailbacks from Westway all the way to White City on Tuesday evening (October 31) as two lanes of the A40 were forced to close.

Motorists had to battle poor visibility in the area as white smoke clouded the busy carriageway during the evening rush hour - shortly after 5pm.

In total 35 firefighters from Northolt, Southall, Ruislip, Hillingdon and Stanmore fire stations had to battle the massive bonfire for around four hours.

People reported on social media that wood has been added to the bonfire over the past month and it had been getting bigger every day.

It was brought under control at around 9.20pm but the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The lanes remained closed until midnight as footage showed plumes of smoke rising from the bonfire and caused long tailbacks on the A40 .
