An elderly horse fell into a ditch in Northwood and was stuck there for hours before firefighters were called to rescue him.

Jed, a 33-year-old farm horse, was found lying in a stream in Joel Street, Northwood, on Thursday (November 30) when a member of the public spotted him and rang London Fire Brigade.

Firefighters from Ruislip and Wembley responded to the call at 5.44pm.

On arrival they used winches to lift the elderly horse out of the ditch in around half-an-hour.

Jed was taken to a vet that night to be checked for injuries and was then returned to his farm.

He would later get a visit from officers at Ruislip fire station - even receiving a get well soon kiss from one of the crew.

The London Fire Brigade said in a tweet on Tuesday (December 5): "A firefighter's kiss will put a smile on the longest of faces.

"Ruislip and Wembley crews rescue 33-year-old horse called Jed after he fell into a ditch in Northwood.

"Firefighters gave him a follow up visit to check he was ok."
