Individuals and community groups in Heston West have been offered up to £500 to improve their neighbourhood.

They have been invited to apply for a share of the £1m awarded to the area by the Big Lottery Fund.

The grants can be used for any project or activity they think would benefit the community, from sports to knitting.

The Community Chest Fund was set up by the Heston West Community Partnership (HWCP), the group founded to decide how to spend the Lottery windfall.

Taz Virdee, who is coordinating the fund, said: "The idea is to really engage with local individuals and make the process easier for them to set up projects they feel personally and with their neighbours would benefit the area.

"It could be something very small like a gathering. It could be language classes for children or a kickabout for dads.

"We want people to take ownership and learn the skills it takes to get involved with future projects."

A total of £5,000 in grants is available between now and July to any residents of Heston West or to community groups or charities based anywhere, provided the project is happening within the area.

A weekly programme of activities funded by the £1m and run by the charity Groundwork South began last autumn, with events ranging from children's drama workshops to yoga sessions for over-60s.

The money was also used to fund Diwali celebrations last November and a Christmas party the following month.

The £1m was awarded in 2011 as part of the Big Local scheme, after Heston West was identified as the biggest losers when it came to receiving Lottery cash.
