Around £30,000 worth of designer handbags were stolen in a smash and grab raid of a House of Fraser department store.

Thieves smashed their way into the branch in Victoria Street, Westminster , using axes and a crowbar on Tuesday September 12.

Police in Westminster were driving past the department store, at around 3.30am, when they came across evidence of a burglary.

Officers attended and found a number of high value handbags had been stolen after a number of suspects smashed their way into the premises with axes and a crowbar.

A total of 33 Mulberry handbags - each worth around £1,000 - were snatched in the raid, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.

DC Joanna Bellett from Westminster CID said: "The raid on the department store in Victoria Street would have been very loud and will have attracted attention despite the time of night.

"A lot of glass was smashed as entry was forced and I believe that those travelling in and around the area at the time would have seen something that can assist investigators.

"The main glass pane smashed is located directly opposite Benugo Café and Leon Restaurant."

The raid lasted just two minutes, between 3.19am and 3.21am, and the suspects are believed to have made off from the scene on scooters and mopeds.

DC Bellett added: "The suspects made off with 33 high-value Mulberry handbags.

"We have released a selection of images of the handbags stolen in an effort to help trace those involved.

"A number of enquiries, including the recovery of detailed CCTV footage is in hand.

"I would urge any witnesses and those with information to come forward and speak to my team who are ready to take your call."
